On Veterans Day, Lowe’s, in partnership with Building Homes for Heroes and the Town of Mooresville, North Carolina, broke ground on Freedom Hill, a first-of-its-kind community providing mortgage-free housing and support services for injured veterans and first responders.

Located just outside Mooresville’s historic downtown, Freedom Hill represents more than a housing project. It’s a model for holistic community care. The 15-home neighborhood will include access to financial counseling, physical and mental health resources, and emergency funding support, offering residents the foundation to rebuild their lives with dignity and purpose.

“This isn’t just about homes. It’s about hope, healing and honoring our heroes,” said Andy Pujol, founder and CEO of Building Homes for Heroes. “Freedom Hill sends a message across the country that we can do more for those who’ve given so much.”
Lowe’s has partnered with Building Homes for Heroes for six years, helping the organization approach its milestone of 500 gifted homes. More than 40 of those were funded this year alone.
Much of Freedom Hill is being made possible through Lowe’s Round Up for Charity campaign, where customers round up their in-store purchases to the nearest dollar in support of nonprofit partners. Those customer donations are now funding the purchase of land and construction of the new community.

Mooresville played a pivotal role in launching the project. Local and state lawmakers passed legislation allowing the town to lease four acres of land to the nonprofit for just $1, paving the way for the neighborhood’s development.
The initiative also honors Lowe’s commitment to the military community. The company employs more than 26,000 veterans, service members and military spouses and remains focused on delivering 10 million square feet of community impact each year.
Freedom Hill is now accepting applications from 100% service-disabled veterans and Gold Star families, with a new program recently opened to first responders as well. Interested applicants can visit BuildingHomesforHeroes.org to learn more.
